Floor Layer Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship Criteria

To be an apprentice you must:

  • be 16 years of age or older
  • be employed and working 30 hours or more per week
  • be paid at least the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices

Level 2 Floorlayer Apprenticeship Standard:
The Flooring Academy, in Doncaster, South Yorkshire deliver the Floor Layer Standard. This apprenticeship has been created in collaboration with the UK's most prominent flooring businesses / manufacturers and was approved for delivery in November 2018.

Our apprenticeship's are designed for Textile and Resilient floor covering occupations. It will provide vocational skills and training opportunities at the same time as supporting the process of developing these skills in the workplace whilst earning a wage.

The Flooring Academy’s aim is to deliver the best possible training to our apprentices. Our training is supported by leading manufacturers such as Brampton Chase, FBall, Mapei, Tarkett, Project Floors UK & Floorwise and meets the national occupational standard/British standards and maintains the best training techniques.

This apprenticeship will be delivered on a block release basis over a period of approximately 18-24 months (corresponding to employer expectations and learner progress). Our current delivery comprises of 10 blocks of in-centre training (4 days) every 10 weeks. This allows the apprentices to build on their skills by completing uninterrupted tasks which they can then apply to the workplace.

It will combine theoretical and practical training in the following:

  • Health Safety and Welfare in construction and associated industries (Including CSCS Card)
  • Personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS)
  • Employment rights and responsibilities, including career progression and keeping floorlaying knowledge up to date
  • Sub floor preparation
  • LVT Installations
  • Assessing and testing environmental conditions which may affect installation
  • Installation of textile and resilient flooring for commercial and domestic situations
  • Set out floorcoverings effectively on various surfaces
  • Selecting and installing finishing ancillaries
  • Disposing and recycling of waste materials appropriately
  • Interpreting information about the building and how this will impact the installation
  • Planning, estimating and quantifying flooring materials and costings
  • Working in accordance with agreed specifications and timescales
  • Developing customer relations

Functional Skills Maths and English will also be embedded throughout the programme.

End Point Assessment
On completion of the apprenticeship training, apprentices will complete the End Point Assessment. This is the final test of the apprenticeship and is an assessment of the knowledge, skills, and behaviours the apprentice has learned throughout the apprenticeship. The EPA comprises of a knowledge test, practical assessment & a professional discussion, carried out by an external assessor. The EPA confirms that the apprentice is occupationally competent and ready to work in their chosen field.
