This qualification is designed for people already working, or wanting to work, in the UK construction industry; all construction businesses have a legal responsibility to provide their employees with relevant health and safety training. A high standard of health and safety protects employees’ and consumers’ health and helps to maintain the reputation of the business.
Delivering this qualification will provide apprentices and experienced workers with the knowledge and skills they need to apply for their CSCS card (Labourer Card / Green Card) and take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test.
Having a valid CSCS card and passing the CITB test are both mandatory requirements of working in the construction industry because they grant employees access to UK construction sites as non-skilled workers.
This qualification delivers essential understanding of the key terms, legal responsibilities and reasons for good health and safety on a construction site. Students will also learn about risk assessments and method statements, personal protective equipment, emergencies and first aid, reporting accidents, fatalities and ill-health in a construction environment. The content of this qualification will also prepare learners for their CSCS card application and passing the CITB test.
On successful completion of the required learning hours carried out by revision and training provided in centre, candidates will be required to answer 45 multiple choice questions within 60 minutes and score a minimum of 80% as part of their NVQ L1 qualification to determine their understanding of health and safety legislation. This test can be online or paper based but will be agreed with candidates on the day of the course.
This is then followed by the on-line CSCS test of 50 questions, where candidates have 45 mins to complete the test and to score 45 and above to achieve a pass.
A tutorial is available before the test which explains how everything works and lets you try out the buttons and computer.
The knowledge questions cover 16 core areas that are included in all of the tests. For example, you might be asked to identify different fire extinguishers and signs.
The questions are all based on British legislation. Legislation in Northern Ireland differs from the rest of the UK, but for practical reasons all test candidates will answer questions based on UK legislation only.
At the end of the test there is an optional survey that gives you the chance to provide feedback on the test process.
A score report will be printed straight after your Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test to let you know if you have passed or failed.
The score report will also provide you with feedback on any areas where you might benefit from further learning or revision.
A HS&E test pass is often a necessary requirement to apply to join a construction industry card scheme, with different schemes existing for different trades and professions.
Membership of a relevant scheme helps you prove that you can do your job safely, while access to construction sites might need a relevant card.
